What Is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

What does BMI mean? Many people may have heard of a BMI but might not know exactly what that means. A BMI (Body Mass Index) is a good way to determine if your current weight is healthy for your height. Being overweight can strain the heart as well as cause other serious health problems including, but not limited to, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. Often, your BMI is used to determine whether or not you are a candidate for bariatric surgery. Houston and Cypress women and men who are concerned with their health can visit Northwest Houston Surgical Associates to help get them on a path towards health and wellness.

When you meet with any of the Northwest Houston Surgical Association surgeons for a consultation, they will carefully consider what will help you attain the best possible outcome for you and your lifestyle. They will educate you until they are convinced that you understand the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery. Houston, TX and Cypress residents can request a consultation online or by calling our office at 713-426-2400.

A person’s BMI is one of the most commonly used ways of assessing whether someone is obese. An ideal BMI ranges from 19 to 25. Between 25 and 30 is considered overweight, and 30 to 35 is considered obese. A BMI of 35 to 40 is considered to be severely obese. At 40 and above, obesity is considered “morbid,” which means related to health problems or illness. BMIs over 40 are called “morbid” because the excess weight can cause symptoms like joint pain and shortness of breath, and illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure.
